PLEASE NOTE:
The new F3125 specification is a consolidation and replacement of six ASTM standards, including; A325, A325M, A490, A490M, F1852, and F2280. Until the F3125 specification is more widely used and until the A325 and A490 specifications have been eliminated by ASTM, we will continue to manufacture and sell A325 and A490 heavy hex structural bolts under their existing specification requirements, unless F3125 is referenced in the inquiry and/or purchase order.ASTM A325 (F3125)
Structural bolts, steel, heat treated, 120/105 ksi minimum tensile strength.
The ASTM A325 specification covers high strength heavy hex structural bolts from 1/2” diameter through 1-1/2” diameter. These bolts are intended for use in structural connections and therefore have shorter thread lengths than standard hex bolts.
This specification is applicable to heavy hex structural bolts only. For bolts of other configurations and thread lengths with similar mechanical properties, see Specification A449.
Bolts for general applications, including anchor bolts, are covered by Specification A449. Also refer to Specification A449 for quenched and tempered steel bolts and studs with diameters greater than 1-1/2″ but with similar mechanical properties.

P1= Represent 70% of minimum specified tensile strenght and tension in pounds.
P2 = 15% of min. tension
D= Dia. (in.)/12 = bolt diameter in feet.
Tension is measured in kip. A kip equals 1000 pounds-force
Torque is measured in foot pounds (ft·lb)
Source: The table above is inspired by Table A2.1, A2.2, A2.3 and A2.4 from the ASTM F3125 Standard that you can purchase on the ASTM Website
Procedure
Bolts that fit in a tension measuring device:
- Install the bolt and any required spacers in the tension measuring device so that the bolt stick-out is flush with the nut to a maximum of three threads stick-out.
- Tighten the fastener assembly to the tensions (PT)
- Match-mark the bolt, nut and faceplate of the calibrator.
- Tighten the fastener assembly to at least the minimum installation tension (P1) and record both the tension and torque. The torque shall be read with the nut in motion. For tensions exceeding minimum tension the torque shall not exceed 0.25 PD,where P = tension in pounds, and D = Dia. (in.)/12 = bolt diameter in feet.
- Further tighten the nut to the rotation (P2). The rotation is measured from the initial marking (PT)
- Record the tension at the completion of the rotation (P2). The tension shall equal or exceed 1.15 × the minimum installation tension.
- After loosen and remove the nut. There shall be no sign of thread shear failure, stripping or torsional failure. The nut shall turn on the bolt threads to the position it was in during the test. The nut does not need to run the full length of the threads. Inability to turn the nut by hand is considered thread failure. Broken bolts fail the test.
Download our usefull ROCAP data form PDF
The assembly lot passes the RC test if all samples meet the requirements of P1 and P2
The lot shall be considered non conforming if the assembly fails to pass any one of the following requirements:
- Exceeding the maximum allowable torque in P1
- Inability of the assembly to reach the rotation required
- Inability to remove the nut after installing to the rotation specified
- Failure to provide the tension required (P2) after full rotation
- Shear failure of the threads as determined by visual examination of bolt and nut threads following removal.
- Torsional or torsional/tension failure of the bolt.
Elongation of the bolt, in the threads between the nut and bolt head, is to be expected and is not to be classified as a failure.
If the bolts are too short to fit in a tension measuring device :
- Refer to ASTM F3125 – 15 annexe A2. section A2.7 Method 2 – short bolt test procedure
Pretensioned installation involves the inelastic elongation of the portion of the threaded length between the nut and the thread run-out. ASTM A490 bolts and galvanized ASTM A325 bolts possess sufficient ductility to undergo one pretensioned installation, but are not consistently ductile enough to undergo a second pretensioned installation. Black ASTM A325 bolts, however, possess sufficient ductility to undergo more than one pretensioned installation as suggested in the Guide (Kulak et al., 1987). As a simple rule of humb, a black ASTM A325 bolt is suitable for reuse if the nut can be run up the threads by hand
Sampling
sampling shall be to F1470, except that a minimum of two assemblies shall be tested regarless of lot quantity. Alternate sampling may be agreed upon between the supplier and purchaser.
